About Us

Help is Our Main Goal Since 2015

Founded in 2015, Pragathi Charitable Trust is a non-profit organization committed to social transformation through its guiding motto, “Protecting, Educating, and Uplifting Young Lives.” Over the years, the Trust has emerged as a credible and compassionate institution dedicated to the welfare, protection, education, and empowerment of vulnerable children and marginalized communities.

At the heart of the organization’s work is its commitment to child welfare and holistic development. Through its Child Care Institutions (CCI) for girls and boys, the Trust provides a safe, caring, and family-like environment for children who are orphaned, abandoned, vulnerable, or in need of care and protection. The organization ensures access to quality education, nutritious food, healthcare, emotional well-being, life skills, and recreational activities that help children grow into confident and responsible individuals. Working in close coordination with Child Welfare Committees (CWC), the Department of Women and Child Development, and District Child Protection Units (DCPU), the Trust actively safeguards children’s rights and promotes their rehabilitation, reintegration, and long-term development. Special emphasis is also placed on maintaining family connections by facilitating children’s interaction and visits with their families during holidays and special occasions.

Recognizing that education is a powerful tool for social change, Pragathi Charitable Trust® has expanded its initiatives to support government schools and rural communities across Karnataka. The Trust undertakes educational development programs that improve learning opportunities for underprivileged children through distribution of educational materials, awareness programs, mentoring, skill-building activities, and infrastructure support. These efforts aim to reduce educational inequality, prevent school dropouts, and encourage children from economically weaker backgrounds to pursue their dreams with confidence.

The organization is equally committed to promoting dignity and inclusion for persons with disabilities. Through mobility assistance initiatives, Pragathi Charitable Trust® distributes wheelchairs and supportive aids to individuals with physical disabilities, enabling greater independence, accessibility, and participation in society. The Trust also advocates for inclusive communities where persons with disabilities are treated with respect, equality, and opportunity.

In response to growing environmental challenges, the Trust has integrated sustainability and climate responsibility into its mission. It promotes sustainable agriculture and environmentally conscious practices that help reduce carbon emissions, conserve natural resources, and create awareness about climate action among rural communities. Through tree plantation drives, eco-awareness campaigns, and support for sustainable farming methods, the organization contributes toward building healthier and more resilient communities.

In addition to its core programs, Pragathi Charitable Trust® continues to address broader social issues such as poverty, social inequality, child protection awareness, women and youth empowerment, community health, and rural development. By combining compassion with community participation, the Trust strives to create lasting social impact and empower individuals to lead lives of dignity, safety, and opportunity.

Mission/vision

Our Mission

Our vision, to do so that current generation of underprivileged and children with difficult situation living below the poverty line, integrates seamlessly within mainstream society.

The Challenges

India has been grappling with the issue of street and homeless children, as well as those living in slums, for decades. Nationally, an estimated 1.5 million children are classified as “street children,” but only about 17,000 have so far been actively identified and brought into institutional care systems, revealing a vast gap between need and response. A large proportion of these children fall under the category of “Children in Need of Care and Protection (CNCP)” under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and many also live in slums where access to education, health, and identity documents remains severely limited.

Scale of the problem

  • Research‑based estimates suggest that India has around 18 million children living or working on the streets, with roughly 11 million concentrated in urban centres alone, exposed daily to trafficking, hazardous labour, and abuse.
  • In slum areas, studies in cities like Delhi show that a large share of school‑age children either never enrol or drop out early, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and deprivation.
  • Government data on Child Protection Services (CPS) indicate that, as of 2021, there were 1,565 child‑care institutions (CCIs) and 66,788 children in institutional care across India, yet this represents only a fraction of the estimated millions of CNCP and street children.

Pragathi Charitable Trust’s CCI‑based work

Pragathi Charitable Trust, based in Bengaluru, is a registered non‑profit working with the poorest and most vulnerable urban populations, including children in need of care and protection; migrant families; and persons with disabilities. The Trust runs a Child Care Institution (CCI)‑style facility that provides food, shelter, clothing, counselling, education support, and rehabilitation services for children “in need,” aligning with the spirit of the JJ Act and the broader Child Protection Services framework
